Do you know what components make up a spin-on oil filter?

As you know, an oil filter is used to prevent engine oil contamination during the lubrication of parts. The oil filter removes impurities such as soot, iron filings, etc., which are gradually created in the oil due to heat, friction, and engine operation, so that clean oil flows through the engine parts. As mentioned in the applications of oil filters in the articles, cleaning engine oil deposits and minimizing oil delivery time to the engine during cold or initial starts are the two main functions of an automotive oil filter.

Over time, impurities and combustion residues such as dust, metal debris, carbon deposits, and others accumulate in the engine. The oil filter cleans the engine oil because engine performance depends on clean oil. Gradually, soot saturates the oil. The spin-on oil filter is made of several thin holes that prevent thick oil from entering the engine. With a properly functioning filter, all moving parts such as connecting rods, camshaft, and valves are protected against wear and damage.

All components of a spin-on oil filter play an important role in the filtration process. To better understand the function of an oil filter, it is best to become familiar with its different parts:

  • Filter Shell: The metal housing where the filter components are placed and engine oil flows through.
  • Filter Retaining Spring: Holds the filter components inside the metal housing.
  • Filter Element: The main component responsible for filtering the engine oil.
  • Anti-Drainback Valve: Prevents oil inside the filter from draining out when the engine is off.
  • Base Plate: The inlet and outlet for oil flow and the mounting point for attaching the filter to the filter base.
  • Retainer Ring: The metal part attached to the base plate for holding the sealing gasket in place.
  • Sealing Gasket: Prevents oil leakage from the filter mounting point.

In the video above, you can fully observe all the internal components of a spin-on oil filter and the function of each one.
